A Day in the Life of the RDDS Production Facility

At RDDS Avionics, every product that leaves our doors — whether a rugged display, control unit, video management system, or mission computer — carries with it the assurance of reliability, precision, and long-term support. But behind every unit sits a story of engineering detail, teamwork, and a carefully controlled production process designed for defence-grade performance.

This is a look inside a typical day at the RDDS Production Facility — where world-class avionics take shape.

08:00 – The Day Begins: Quality First

The first people through the doors are the production and quality teams. Before any assembly work starts, the day kicks off with:

  • Work order reviews

  • Component checks

  • Updates from the quality office

  • Project briefs for the day’s builds

Clear sight of priorities ensures that every unit, whether a custom configuration or repeat batch, starts on the right footing.

At RDDS, quality isn’t a final step — it’s built into the process from the moment the first component is touched.

09:00 – PCB Assembly & Incoming Inspection

As assemblies begin, technicians perform meticulous incoming checks on PCBs, sub-components, and mechanical hardware. Thanks to our TruView™ Fusion X-Ray Inspection System, RDDS can now inspect:

  • BGA solder joints

  • Hidden or buried vias

  • Fine-pitch components

  • Internal PCB layers

This non-destructive inspection capability means issues can be caught early — long before final build, preventing costly rework or field failures.

10:30 – Mechanical Build & Unit Assembly

Once components pass inspection, assembly teams begin building:

  • Display chassis

  • Control panels

  • Video switching modules

  • Connectors, harnesses, and mechanical sub-assemblies

Every part of the build is guided by controlled manufacturing documentation and supported by close communication between engineering and production.

Assemblies undergo torque checks, alignment verification, and intermediate inspection to ensure all hardware is secure and compliant with aerospace standards.

12:30 – Functional Testing & Calibration

After assembly, units move through RDDS’s dedicated testing stations. Depending on the product, this might include:

  • Display luminance and colour calibration

  • Touchscreen verification

  • Video signal routing tests

  • Environmental pre-checks

  • Control unit input/output validation

For video management systems, HD-SDI, HDMI, composite, and LVDS signals are routed through all inputs and outputs to confirm perfect operation.

For displays, brightness, contrast, and NVIS compatibility (where applicable) are carefully measured against specification.

15:30 – Final Quality Sign-Off

Before a product can be released, it goes through one of the most important stages: quality sign-off.

This includes:

  • A full documentation review

  • Serialisation & traceability checks

  • Firmware version verification

  • Visual inspection

  • Functional re-tests if needed

Nothing leaves the RDDS facility without a complete audit trail and verified compliance with build standards.

16:00 – Packing, Dispatch & Lifetime Support

With sign-off complete, units enter the packing and dispatch area — but the relationship with the customer doesn’t end there.

RDDS provides:

  • Long-term repair services

  • Spares support

  • Form-fit-function replacements when components become obsolete

  • Technical support throughout the platform’s life

  • Upgrade paths for displays and video management systems

This lifecycle care is a major reason customers choose RDDS for critical avionics hardware.

Where Craftsmanship Meets Engineering

What happens inside our production facility is more than assembly — it’s the meeting point of engineering, precision, and passion for delivering technology that operators trust.

Every day is different, but the philosophy is the same:
build it right, test it thoroughly, and support it for decades.
