From Gauges to Glass: A Brief History

The first aircraft cockpits were dominated by individual mechanical instruments – each serving a single purpose. As missions became more complex and aircraft systems more integrated, so too did the need for multifunction displays (MFDs) capable of consolidating critical flight and mission data into a single, intuitive interface.

By the 1980s and 1990s, the shift to “glass cockpits” began. These digital systems replaced clusters of analogue instruments with configurable electronic displays. This not only improved situational awareness but also reduced pilot workload and simplified maintenance.

Unlike commercial electronics, avionic displays must perform in harsh conditions – where vibration, temperature extremes, and electromagnetic interference are part of everyday operation.

Yet in defence and aerospace, touchscreen technology must be adapted for gloved use, extreme temperatures, and precision input – challenges RDDS engineers solve through careful interface design and calibration.

As sensors, cameras, and mission systems deliver ever-greater volumes of data, display performance must keep pace.
RDDS’s latest Full HD displays are designed to handle complex video inputs from multiple sources, all while maintaining minimal latency and exceptional visual fidelity.

Combined with our Video Management Units (VSU500, IU300), operators gain seamless control over mission feeds, maps, and situational data – all through a unified visual environment.
